The second death of the dinosaurs: the imminent end of fossil fuels

Humanity is living through a historic turning point. After decades dominated by coal, oil and gas, we are finally witnessing their decline. This shift is profound and real, driven by technological advances, climate policies and the urgency of preserving our planet. The energy transition is no longer just an ideal: it is a concrete route towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.

The energy transition in Brazil: an example for the world

In Brazil, recent data show that the renewable revolution is well underway. According to the National Energy Balance (BEN) 2025 Summary Report, with base year 2024, Brazil's energy matrix reached 50% renewability.

In the electricity sector, the figures are impressive: 88.2% of generation came from renewable sources in 2024, according to the same report.

The research also found that solar (photovoltaic) power generation reached 70.7 TWh in 2024, growing 39.6% on the previous year; installed PV capacity surpassed 48 GW.

These figures show that Brazil is not only capable of adopting renewables on a large scale, but is already among the world leaders in this transition — a point highlighted by the Ministry of Mines and Energy.

The global energy transition: renewables growing, fossil fuels shifting

Elsewhere, the outlook is also optimistic. In the Global Energy Review 2025 from the IEA (International Energy Agency), we see:

• Among new energy sources, renewables led the way: they accounted for 38% of the growth in energy supply in 2024.
  
  

• Global electricity generation grew strongly, and more than 80% of that growth came from clean sources (renewables + nuclear).
  
  

• Despite a slight increase in natural gas (+2.5%) and coal (<1%) generation in 2024, fossil fuels are losing ground in global electricity generation growth.
  
  

In addition, the IEA's Renewables 2025 report sets out ambitious projections for the coming years: solar capacity is expected to more than double between 2025 and 2030, driven by falling costs, greater social acceptance and supportive policies. 

COP30: Brazil as the stage for transformation

COP30, whose Brazilian presidency carries symbolic weight, is a unique opportunity to show the world how the energy transition can be fair, effective and sustainable.

IRENA (the International Renewable Energy Agency), in partnership with the Brazilian COP30 presidency and the Global Renewables Alliance, released a pre-COP report revealing some important points.

Although 582 GW of renewable energy capacity was added globally in 2024 (the largest annual increase on record), from 2025 onwards that annual figure would need to double to meet the target set by COP28 for 2030. The agency highlights overcoming infrastructure, policy, financing and cooperation barriers as essential to keeping up the pace of expansion
